Jam of the Week: Charley Patton

charley

Artist: Charley Patton

Album: The Definitive Charley Patton

Genre: Delta Blues

Date: 1929-1934

Sound: The Father of the Delta Blues

Cool Stuff: Charley Patton is considered to be “The Father of the Delta Blues,” pretty solid title right there. Ol’ Charley (sometimes spelled Charlie) was the first to emerge from the Dockery Plantation in Mississippi, learning a new unique style of music from older friend Henry Sloan. This new music emerged as early blues, and Charley jammed with some other legends such as Willie Brown, Son House, Tommy Johnson, and John Lee Hooker. Some younger lads also hung around Charley, like Robert Johnson and Howlin’ Wolf. If you want to get a sense of Blues, or really music in general, give Charley a listen, and see where it all began.
