Chasing Ghosts: The Search For Answers On The Mississippi Blues Trail

map

I was in the middle of nowhere. I drove an hour south of Memphis, down a maze of directions I had to hunt for online. I didn’t know if they were correct, but I had a mission in mind. It didn’t make any sense, but I just kept driving. I passed confederate flags waving proudly in front of ramshackle houses. I went up and down rolling hills that reminded me of southern Indiana by my alma mater. I crept by a sea of green on both sides of the road, with foliage covering every inch of the ground and creeping up the trunks of the trees. Then I turned on Kimbrough Chapel drive and felt a rush of excitement. It was like I found my place on a treasure map and the trunk full of gold was just ahead.

The Rolling Stones Show Review

Someone else took this picture who had way better seats than me

Venue: Arrowhead Stadium

Location: Kansas City, Kansas

Date: 06/27/15

Inebriation Level: Too Full On Soul Food To Get Drunk

Number one on my list of shows was The Rolling Stones. I mean, we know Keith Richards will somehow live to be 100 with a careful mix of hard drugs and booze, but the rest of the guys are, well, old. I had to catch them while they’re still touring. Maybe I’ll look back at this 10 years from now, when they’re still rocking stadiums, and laugh at the immediacy of having to see them. But this time around, The Stones was a must.

The last time they toured in 2013, they skipped my fair city of Denver, CO for bigger markets. I wrote them an open letter imploring them to come out to the Mile High City, but alas, it was ignored. This time around, they skipped my fair city for smaller markets. So through the plains of Kansas it would be to finally see The Rolling Stones.

RIP Johnny Winter

jw

Well CNN just gave some pretty lame-ass news. The legendary Texas Blues guitarist Johnny Winter passed away at the young age of 70.

If you don’t know who Johnny Winter is, let me bring you up to speed. Dude…f**king…rips. I mean, you hear this guy play and you wonder what other guitarists are going to do for a living. There’s no damn competition. I’m talking about lightning-fast Texas style slide Blues guitar faster than you can even comprehend.

Show #57: Slowhand

logo

Some people need no introduction, and that includes Eric Clapton, the man known as “slowhand.” Everyone talks about his mad guitar skills, but few realize that he’s been shredding his ax in more bands than anyone else. Maybe that’s why he’s the only dude to ever win three inductions into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Three times a charm or whatever they say. So sit back, relax, and listen to slowhand evolve through the ages of Rock awesomeness.

Show #56: Alone Again Or

logo

After some jamming out to Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska this week, I thought I’d focus on the stripped-down basics of music. If you remove all the complexities and over production, you get to the core of the tuneskies. Just a musician and their instrument, nothing else. Only then can you really hear what makes a song great, with the emotion and honesty that a great musician can communicate. So let’s mellow out for the next hour and listen to some great musicians delivering killer jams in their rawest form.

Gary Clark Jr Show Review

IMG_1976

Venue: Ogden Theatre

Location: Denver, Colorado

Date: 10/11/13

Inebriation Level: Mini-Bottle Fueled Buzz

There is hope for the Blues and Gary Clark Jr just may be the answer. Let me back up a bit.

Gary Clark Jr is the Austin based guitar slinger making waves in the popular music realm with a smooth mix of many different genres. He’s not just a Blues guitarist, but he pays homage to the R&B greats of the past, still with a contemporary sound. Being a fan of the Austin scene, the Blues, and you know, music, I made sure to get tickets to his Denver show well in advance.
